The trail running routes for “THE ROCK” Stage Race and Trail Fest, which takes place on the weekend of 28-30 September 2018 on the slopes of the famous Paarl Mountain, are “really special”, according to event director Darren Herbst.
“THE ROCK” Stage Race and Trail Fest, presented by Paarlberg BMW, constitutes Paarl’s biggest trail run and mountain-bike weekend. In addition to the 3-stage mountain-bike stage race, a total of seven trail run and mountain-bike events are presented at Spice Route Destination and Rhebokskloof Estate on the slopes of the Paarl Mountain.
The festival caters for the entire spectrum of trail runners as well as mountain-bikers and the racing is hosted in vibey upbeat race villages, boasting lots of entertainment, live bands, stacks of fun activities and a range of artisan culinary delights.
“THE ROCK affords mountain bikers and trail runners with a passion for their sport a quintessential off-road experience in sublime surroundings without the usual arm-and-a-leg cost to enter,” says Herbst.
“When we decided to include trail runs as part of ‘THE ROCK’ we wanted to present trail runners with something really special. The trails are designed to offer runners a true challenge on picturesque trails that will linger in their memory.”
Spice Route Destination, situated on the Southern slopes of Paarl Mountain next to the N1, plays host to the signature 21km trail on Saturday 29 September. “This is the big one for the weekend and aimed at experienced trail runners,” says Herbst.
“The 21km runners will get a bit of everything – challenging climbs up and on the slopes of Paarl Mountain with views and terrain that quite simply don’t have their equal.”
On the valley floor, once runners descend off the mountain, participants will experience the flowing open spaces of Die Vlaktes Trail that winds through forests, olive orchards, vineyards and open fields.
“The terrain has a bit of everything and we believe it will give the big guns a great experience,” says Herbst, adding, “and don’t expect the basic water stations that are offered at other trail runs. This is THE ROCK and we are going all out,” he smiled.
The Sunday trail runs at Rhebokskloof Estate are aimed at accommodating intermediate and beginner runners.
“The 10km trail run is a combination of the Pinotage and Hillside Trails at Rhebokskloof,” says Herbst. “These routes need no introductions. The views and terrain are some of the best in the Western Cape and will provide 10km of pure bliss.
“It’s 10km of delightful single track through the Superbowl and will top off a great weekend,” says Herbst.
Rhebokskloof will also host 5km and 2km options for the less adventurous and kiddies. According to Herbst the trail for these distances stay lower down on the mountain and don’t include any big climbs.
“The routes are designed for a fun enjoyable experience with great terrain, views and exciting water stations. Our aim is fun so come and enjoy a great day out!”
