Paarl’s biggest mountain-bike and trail run festival has added an iconic 2-day trail-run to the weekend’s already packed activities, rounding off “The Rock” as the most complete endurance offering in the Cape Winelands.

The Rock Mountain-Bike and Trail Run Festival comes to Spice Route Destination and Rhebokskloof Estate from 27-29 September 2019 with lots of entertainment and fun activities to cater for mountain-bikers and trail runners as well as their families.

The off-road festival presents a 3-day mountain-bike stage race and 2-day trail-run as well as seven other individual fun rides and runs for mountain-bikers and trail runners which take place at Spice Route Destination and Rhebokskloof Estate.

“Paarl mountain is a haven for trail runners,” said Race Director Darren Herbst. Herbst believes he has included unequalled trails, the best views and ample challenging terrain for serious trail runners in the two-day offering.

“Day 1 is a mild 21km introduction to the mountain, featuring 568m of elevation. It remains on the lower slopes, traversing the mountain anti-clock-wise on beautifully sculpted trails that run through various vineyards, orchards and even a stud farm.

“It includes cliff-face running with views all the way to Table Mountain and Franschhoek before dropping down to finish at Spice Route Destination next to the N1 carriage way,” said Herbst.

Although the second stage is shorter at 18.5km, it boasts a challenging 720m of elevation. The route presents an “up-and-over the mountain”, as locals refer to it. “The trail climbs to the Paarl Reserve via wonderful trails through Spice Route, Diamant and the Taal Monument.

“It then follows the reserve road with beautiful views over the Paarl Valley for most of the way before kicking up to the Water Tower and then providing a final 7km downhill to Rhebokskloof.”

According the Herbst the second stage is hard work up to the 11km mark, but then the rewards come in various forms on the renowned Rhebokskloof trails.
